History

Established in 1992 by the European Commission, the Lorenzo Natali Prize for journalism is awarded to journalists for outstanding reporting on Human Rights, Democracy and Development.
The 2009 Lorenzo Natali Prize Edition has, once again, elicited noted interest: more than 1,000 journalists from more than 133 countries participated. The 15 award winners were selected by an independent jury, made up of NGO representatives, leading journalists, and news agency representatives.

The jury was chaired by Barbara Serra, an Al Jazeera journalist.

The Lorenzo Natali Prize was originally reserved for the printed and online press. In 2008, for the first time, the European Commission decided to allow radio and TV journalists to take part.
