In 1984, in apartheid South Africa, Duma Joshua Kumalo was falsely accused of a political murder he did not commit and was sentenced to hang. Fifteen hours before the rope, he got a stay of execution but was then sentenced to life in prison. When apartheid ended, he was released as his innocence was widely accepted. But, he was haunted by his time on death row, and more importantly, the fact that his criminal record was never officially cleared. His wife has now taken up the struggle on his behalf.
