George Lucky

These stories were published as part of a five-day series in BusinessDAY Newspaper about the plight of many African illegal immigrants that see travelling through the desert as the safest and easiest way to Europe, despite the risks and the many deaths that have been recorded. He started the trip from Lagos, Nigeria by road through Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and eventually into Mali on a difficult five-day journey.

Lucky George’s journalism career started about eleven years ago when he joined the then newly established The Diet Newspaper now Daily Independent. On joining The Diet, he was assigned to report travel and tourism. He had some prior experience on the subject with an independent television producer. A few years later, Lucky moved on to join another independent producer, producing a popular television programme ‘Expression’ on arts, culture, entertainment and tourism as the tourism segment presenter on Nigerian Television Authority (NTA Channel 10), Lagos.
After a successful period as a presenter, Lucky George went back to print media where he started his own publication, ‘Travel and Tourism Magazine’ and also ventured into marketing, media and public relations consultancy servicing the travel and tourism industry before joining BusinessDAY Newspaper in 2003.
