Birgit Virnich
Birgit Virnich studied in Toronto, Chicago and at the London School of Economics, where she graduated with Master in International Relations in 1988. She has worked on various assignments as a freelance journalist : Deutsche Welle, BBC, Channel 4, VISNEWS. She has been employed by ARD/WDR as a TV journalist and news editor since 1992. On 11th of September 2001 she covered America’s Day of Terror in New York for WDR. She is currently the main correspondent for the regions of Eastern, Central and Western Africa. |

One year after German EUROR-troops helped the people of the DR Congo to realize peaceful elections in Kinshasa, armed groups still attack local communities, loot, rape, kidnap women and children in Eastern Congo. « The Weapon of Mass Rape in Eastern Congo » tells the story of rape victims, who are desperately looking for help at the only hospital in the region. Doctor Claude is on call 24 hours a day for a monthly salary of 250 dollars. « We have to learn to forgive, otherwise the hate of the militia will end up killing us», tell the rape victims. The report gives a deep insight into the strenght of the women of Eastern Congo, who bear the brunt of the violence. |
