The transition of democracy does not happen overnight, it is part of a gradual process. This is the main theme of this story, which is centred on a neighbourhood in South Africa that is trying to shake off its painful past. Sophiatown’s past hunts its present, keeping its old white Afrikaans residents and its black residents, returning to the neighbourhood decades after they were evicted, ill at ease with each other. The conflict between these two factions of the neighbourhood has manifested itself in overtly violent acts and has made it almost impossible for the community to exist as a cohesive whole. However, there are new, ambitious plans for the neighbourhood in order for it to regain its glorious multi-cultural past and to bring about harmony.
