João Antônio BARROS and Thiado PRADO received the 1st Prize for Latin America and the Caribbean for their article « Dossiê Milícia» published in the newspaper O Dia in Brasil. Thiado PRADO, 24 years old, has worked as a reporter with O Dia since June 2007. He also worked for the paper O Povo. João Antônio BARROS, 46 years old, has been working with O Dia for 18 years. His work is focused on human rights’ violation by the police and civil rights corruption. |

The article treats the issue of paramilitary groups that multiplied in 2008 and reached the alarming number of 78 occupied hills and shanty towns in Brazil. O Dia newspaper shows through the series ‘Dossiê Milícia’ ("The Militia File", published from 5th July 2008 till June, 2009) how these groups work and who they are. It shows also how a number of police officers threaten and impose their own laws with guns and terror on nearly 2 million people in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. |
